Jacki
...is another man's treasure.

Lately, Peter and I have been talking about what we want to do once our lease is up in May. Do we want to sign for another year and keep saving up money for a down payment, or see what is on the market and buy now. Here in the Northern Virginia area the housing market is deflating rather quickly, and for the first time in like 5 years you can get a great home at a decent price.

So out of curiosity one day this week I searched the local listings for houses within our price range and came across this house (click here if you are curious to see more):

I was very excited to see the asking price, so I looked further into it and saw the kitchen:

Sweet! It has a double oven, cooktop, and a microwave that is not hoovering above the stove. I'm in love.

And the best part? The asking price dropped $50,000 yesterday!! So we have an appointmet with our realtor to go look at it, and a couple of other houses in the area.

And yes, we've made the decision to buy. It is very unexpected, and our lease isn't up until May. But if we can get this particular house for $280,000, or another house similar to this, I will find a way to get out of our current lease a couple of months early.

In other news, Emma told me that she is going to write a letter to Santa and tell him what she needs for Christmas. When I asked her what she needs, she told me a guinea pig. When I asked her what she'd name it, she said:

"Her first name would be Cookie and her last name would be Dough."

So there you have it. She wants a guinea pig named Cookie Dough.

And ladies, I have a question. What would you do if you woke up at 5:30 in the morning so that you could put dinner in the slowcooker before leaving for work, and then while cleaning up the dishes after dinner your busband throws the leftover homemade Asian Spice Pork Sauce out instead of asking you if you want to save it? Granted, he kept the noodles and pork, but dumped the sauce. And the entire meal centered around the sauce. It was delicious.

So for lunch we now have noodles, pork and spaghetti sauce.

And we are still waiting to hear news about Peter's step-dad. There is a 6-hour time difference between here and Denmark, so he should be coming out of surgery soon.

That house is gorgeous! I have total house buying envy! We always talk about buying, find the perfect condo, and then talk ourselves out of buying. Good luck! :)

  2. Karen Says:

I would say, "you have a man who actually cleans up the kitchen after dinner and you're complaining because he dumped the sauce???" Girl, be happy. It's only sauce.

  3. Ronnica Says:

Pretty house. Now certainly seems like a good time to buy if you're in it for the long haul!

  4. Blakely Says:

What a great house. I hope you find the right one at the right price.

  5. Annikke Says:

OH WOW! That house is gorgeous! The market in Colorado is doing the same thing, houses that once were way out of our league (like 3x or more) are falling into (and below) our range. That is how we got our awesome house in the spring. We couldn't believe the price when we saw it!!

Still praying for your family and the surgery.

  6. Great house, good luck.

What a wonderful Christmas present for the family.

  7. I'm sorry... the sauce didn't look like something you would save and well... I was cleaning up real good...

I guess if a pair of shoes won't help maybe a house with double oven will :-)

ohh yeah we were talking about santa clause the other day driving to school or was it driving home from mam's... anyway we were also talking about bigger animals were not good to have because they would get lonely since she can only play with them on the weekend...
She did mention that birds would be good because they don't get lonely... Of course I said she had to talk with mom about that one.

I am always amazed at how much cheaper house prices are in other states. I am in Southern California and prices are outrageous here.

  14. Cat Says:

    Good Luck!

That's a little over half of what we paid for our happy home, but we're in OC.

i can believe the price of that house! WOW! The house down the road from me is (NOT) selling for that amount. It's smaller and prob a lot older.

Thanks for stopping by my blog - you're welcome anytime. We have a teensy townhouse in NoVa - we're renting it out while we're here in China. I hate to see the prices plummeting, because I don't know if we'll still fit in that house when we go home. But I'm pleased you have a chance to buy something - prices were just getting insane.

    Good luck...

  21. hi Jackie! Glad you found my blog! Another American woman married to a Dane! :o) We are our own club, I think! LOL

Looking forward to learning more about you! And someday meeting you when you take your next trip to DK!

  22. Mr Farty Says:

Nice house. Mrs F says all that wood makes the kitchen look dark, but I suppose it depends how you light it.

We spent considerably less than $50,000 on our place, but that was 27 years ago and it's only got three bedrooms. Two now - I have a computer room-cum-dining room.

    Fingers crossed for step-dad.

  23. Want to hear a funny story? My husband asked me on the way home from church today if I'd seen the house Jacki was looking at. I had no idea what he was talking about. Good thing at least one of us has time to read your blog :) The house is gorgeous by the way and gives me hope for buying a house someday in the future.

  24. Jeff Says:

Nice house! But too bad it doesn't have any windows. I like my houses with lots of windows. ;-)

So sorry to hear about your FIL... hope all is well there.

  25. Dee Says:

How is Peters step dad doing?

I like your new Christmas blog look.

  26. Stephanie Says:

Wow, that is a gorgeous house!

    Men!

We had a guinea pig until Kale left for Cuba, then I gave her away. She was a good little creature. Although they are noisy, smelly, and kick stuff everywhere. I suggest an aquarium, we had to switch to one to keep the stuff off the floor.
